Where Applicants Get Stuck

Three places
applicants get stuck

The hard part of an essay is deciding what you are actually trying to say.

Plenty of experience, no story

Research, projects and activities fill the CV. Pull them into a 650-word personal statement, though, and each part works alone while together they read like three different people.

The material is there. What is missing is the thread that runs through all of it.

Fluent in Chinese, flat in English

A draft that reads well in Chinese turns vague and generic once translated into the context of an application. Two different contexts are at work.

Admissions readers judge an essay by different standards from a school writing teacher.

Five drafts in and more lost than ever

By the third draft the doubt sets in. By the fifth, it is hard to tell which version is really you.

At that point you need someone to make the call: what stays, what goes, what deserves a rewrite.

The Method · Four Stages

The RAF essay method

Refined over six years and several hundred applicants, the method moves an essay through four stages. Each stage has clear participants and a clear output.

0
Stage 0 · Life Coach Explore Session

Explore Session with a life coach

Before any writing, students hold one to three in-depth conversations with an RAF life coach. These are prepared, structured conversations that give an outside view at the most pressured point of the application season: why you chose this direction, which moments truly changed you, where your strengths and blind spots lie. Many students realise here, for the first time, that the person worth writing about was there all along.

Four concrete outputs from this stage

You will use them through the whole application season and beyond.
  • Personal through-line · one pageA visual map of how your past experiences connect
  • Three core storiesThe three moments most worth developing, ranked by priority
  • Three "why" statementsThree angles on why you want this subject, for essay openings and interviews
  • Strengths / gaps diagnosisWhere you are strong and what needs work for your target schools
1
Stage 1 · Discovery & Positioning

One-to-one discovery and positioning

A senior essay mentor with a matching subject background follows you throughout: architecture applicants work with an architect, business applicants with a business mentor, fine-art applicants with an art historian or curator. A detailed material form and two to three one-to-one interviews distil a single narrative thread from everything you have, calibrated to each school's culture and each program's preferences.

2
Stage 2 · Structured Drafting

Structured drafting in rounds

Student and mentor write the first draft together. Personal Statements, SoPs and Supplement Essays each get their own structure, and every round carries comments down to the paragraph and sentence, each with a reason. Each stage is approved before the next begins, and revised until you are satisfied.

3
Stage 3 · Dual Review

Dual review through an admissions lens

A native-speaking editor does the final language polish, then a senior advisor reviews the whole from an admissions reader's perspective. Each school gets its own tailored version.

Both answer the same question: beyond your school transcript, what academic evidence can you show?

AP · Advanced Placement

AP tutoring

AP exams take place every May, on the same dates worldwide. We work backwards from your intended major to choose subjects, then place tutoring, mock exams and registration on your application schedule so AP, language tests and essays do not collide in the same month.

RAF ART · Art & Design Track

Art and design applications run on their own track

The portfolio is the core of an art application, so RAF keeps a dedicated team of art mentors. From topic and research to layout review, every portfolio is guided by mentors who graduated from top art schools abroad and work in the field, with final sign-off from our head of teaching.

How We Quote

Fees

Every quote reflects your actual workload and is given in writing after a free assessment.

Why a quote takes a conversation

There is no standard product in study-abroad applications. An art student aiming for Parsons, a science student applying to research master's programs in the UK, and a gap-year student who needs rush supplements for three schools need very different amounts of work and advisor time. Within one package, final quotes can differ by up to 30%.

So we give you a real quote after one free consultation. The consultation costs nothing, and we never recommend a service that does not fit. That principle is the reason RAF has kept going for six years.

Case Studies

Real cases

Three cases from real projects. Some details are blurred to protect student privacy.

MIT
Undergraduate · video essay
Starting point

A science student with three research projects in different directions. Rich experience, scattered image: it read like three different people.

RAF strategy

Rebuilt the logic connecting the three projects around interdisciplinary curiosity, with the video focused on how the student thinks.

"I thought my work was too fragmented to become a story. RAF found a thread running through all three projects that I had never noticed."
Admitted to MIT, Early Action
NYU
Art program · website + video
Starting point

An art and design applicant whose work was spread across media and platforms, with nowhere that showed the whole creative path and design thinking.

RAF strategy

Distilled the creative thread first. The website gathers the work into one narrative; the video shows process and thinking. Both share the same logic.

"After the website was done I saw how consistent my work really is. Put together, it is more convincing than I imagined."
Offer with scholarship
Johns Hopkins
Summer program · video essay
Starting point

A strong writer completely new to the camera: nervous, fast-talking and stiff on the first recording.

RAF strategy

Three script iterations and targeted delivery coaching, from camera fear to a natural presence. The interviewer referred to the video several times.

"I watched the finished video again and again. At last there was a version of me that I actually wanted people to see."
Admitted to the target summer program

Questions We Get Asked

FAQ

Can RAF guarantee admission?
Admission is the university's decision, and no consultant can guarantee it. What we promise is to take your application to its full potential, completely and accurately, so that how you present yourself becomes a strength.
My child writes well already. Do we still need essay support?
Fluent English and an essay that fits US undergraduate or UK master's admissions logic are two different things. We have seen many good writers go off course in choosing material and framing the narrative. The value lies in judgment and structure.
Is the life coach session a kind of counselling? Is it necessary?
It is a prepared, in-depth conversation that gives you an outside view at the most pressured point of the season. Many students call it the most valuable part of their application year, for the essays and for their direction beyond. It produces four concrete outputs.
Is it too late to start?
We recommend starting 8–12 months ahead. If your nearest deadline is under three months away, we assess first and tell you how far RAF can help. We only take on what we can honestly deliver.
Can I buy only essays, or only language or AP tutoring?
Yes. All six service lines and every add-on can be bought separately. Tell us what you need at the consultation and we will give you a tailored written quote.
Does an overseas credit course mean admission to that university?
No. UC summer credit courses use open enrollment, and we say so clearly. What you receive is an official transcript and a real course record, used as evidence of academic ability in your applications.
Can AP exams be taken in the summer?
AP exams are held every May, on the same dates worldwide. Summer is for coursework and preparation; the exam falls the following May, and we build it into your application schedule.
What is the core difference between the Master and Elite packages?
Elite focuses on a complete, polished application. Master adds direct admissions-officer resources and a lifetime mentoring commitment, plus alumni and career networks. If your targets are firmly in the top 10, we suggest talking it through before choosing Master.
Can I meet you in person?
Every consultation can be done online. For an in-person meeting at our Zhengzhou, Chongqing or Shenzhen office, please book a time with your advisor first.
